Abstract:

The present study has attempted to explore the pattern of enrolment witnessed by the country during the last decade. Further, the study also has examined whether the enrolment of children at public and/or private schools is influenced by the socio-economic characteristics of the households. The standard binary logit model has been used to identify the most relevant factors influencing households in selecting schools. The study found a transference in the enrolment of children from government schools to non-government schools. It might be the fact that teaching-learning methods along with the medium of language motivated the households to send their child to private schools. Under this circumstance, the statistical association reveals that the gender of the child, household size, ethnicity, education of the household and the ratio of educational expenditure to total household expenditure are found to be good predictors in the selection of school.
