Evangelia Pappa, Panagiotis Spanos. "Employees’ Perception of Corruption and Fraud Phenomena in the Greek Health Sector" International Research Journal of Economics and Management Studies, Vol. 3, No. 10, pp. 15-19, 2024.
The significant dimensions of corruption and fraud in the health sector worry not only public officials, the scientific community, business world but also citizens who are looking for lines of action to reduce these harmful phenomena. The paper aims to analyze employees’ perceptions about corruption and fraud in their workplace which are reflected through integrity violations. The research is carried out in the wider context of ethical infringements in the field of health sector in Greece. The data-gathering tool is a closed-ended structured questionnaire that was distributed electronically to a random sample of private-sector health employees. A total of 104 usable responses were received from employees at various management levels. Validity and reliability statistical tests, as well as Spearman frequency and correlation tests, were performed. The most crucial factor of fraud is related to the misuse of means of communication (internet and telephone), while the most important determinant of corruption is the phenomenon of nepotism. In addition, the analysis of corruption and fraud is approached in relation to the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants. The concluding remarks will contribute to the improvement of the internal control mechanisms by using appropriate controls to deal with fraud and proactively manage corruption risks.
