Abstract:

Theoretically, Takaful-or Sharia-compliant insurance should have high potential in Muslim-majority countries as its principles mostly overlap with Islamic values. Takaful is supposed to be very readily accepted by societies in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Turkey. Yet the actual adoption rates vary drastically among these countries, with some of them having relatively low uptake. It is through this study that the drivers and barriers towards the adoption of Takaful in these four nations will be researched. To evaluate the impact of the culture, economy, and regulation factors on Takaful penetration among these different environments, this review is based on a Systematic Literature Review. The outcomes have been that, compared with the much stronger regulatory framework, greater financial literacy, and a more aligned culture and values with Sharia principles in Malaysia, more penetration has occurred. On the other side, the problematic areas of Indonesia, Pakistan, and Turkey are more or less based upon low economic stability, limited financial knowledge, and weaker systems of regulation that result in relatively slower penetration. The study underscores the requirement for context-specific strategies that would consider the cultural, economic, and regulatory landscape of every country to increase the uptake of Takaful. In this regard, such insights are significant contributions to policymakers, regulators, and financial institutions, as they can produce actionable recommendations meant to widen the adoption of Takaful internationally. This research enriches the discourse on financial inclusion and regulatory frameworks within the realm of Islamic finance.
