Abstract:

This quantitative research study evaluates the effectiveness of English Medium Education (EME) on academic performance and language proficiency among students in government schools of Andhra Pradesh. The state’s educational transformation, initiated in 2020, aimed to align public education with global academic and employment demands by replacing the regional language medium with English.The study examines outcomes from 950 students, 40 teachers, and 120 parents across rural and urban schools using structured questionnaires, standardized performance tests, and statistical analysis. Findings demonstrate that students in English medium schools achieved higher academic performance (Mean = 72.4, SD = 7.8) compared to vernacular-medium students (Mean = 64.8, SD = 8.3), and their English proficiency scores were significantly stronger (t = 6.92, p < 0.01). However, challenges persist in resource-poor rural areas due to teacher language limitations, insufficient pedagogical support, and lack of bilingual resources. The paper concludes that EME improves performance when supported by adequate training and infrastructure. Recommendations for policy and practice include bilingual scaffolding, ICT-based language support, and targeted teacher training.
